Master Chan retains his Title!

Si-fu retained his title of European Champion in the Lightweight Masters category at the Copa Luiz Carlos Guedes Tournament held at the Latchmere Leisure Centre yesterday (Sunday 21st January 2001). Kamon also sponsored this event, and Si-fu was pleased to see about thirty students turn up to support him, and the event.

Si-fu forced a submission 58 seconds into the bout, using a arm bar (see below).

Although less fighters turned up for this tournament, the quality was superior to last year. Some of the well known UK fighters attending were:

  • Lee Hasdell (1999 UTF Shootfighting Champion. and now a professional fighter contracted to the Japanese Shootfighting tournament) won his category.

  • Rick Young (JKD Master, highest ranking European instructor for Dan Inosanto, Karate & Judo black belt) won his category. Pictured below defeating his opponent with an arm bar while coach Billy Cusack looks on.

  • Rick's coach and grappling mentor Billy Cusack. 5 times British judo champion, 4 times Olympic Judo competitor and 5th Dan Judoka.

  • Phil Norman, JKD & Kick Boxing instructor and winner of Gladiators. Although not fighting due to injury sustained in a recent South African Gladiators series, Phil was supporting his students who were competing in a number of categories.

I was privileged to interview the above fighters, and was very impressed, that despite looking escapees from Con Air, they all were extremely humble and friendly guys.

This tournament was very lucky to have fighting at it and refereeing, the current Brazilian light heavyweight World Champion, Fabrizio Wergun from Bahing, Spain.

Fabrizio fought and won the Absolute Adult Competeition category in a thrilling fight against Billy Cusack. Billy Cusack won the accolade for "best fighter" for his several impressive wins in this category, before losing to the World Champion (shown below).

On the mat, and on the podium!
